Antonyms are the most basic of the 4th grade curriculum. These are words that express the exact opposite of each other in meaning. Not every word has an opposite in Turkish. Just like synonyms, antonyms are limited. Generally, words originating from adjective and adverb fall into this category. Think of words that express quality or quantity.
Sometimes there is confusion. The words “positive” and “negative” are not antonyms. These two are not enemies, just the sentence structure is different. For antonym, both words must be used in the sentence either literally or figuratively.
Where Are Antonyms Used?
See, “Far” and “Near.”
One says closeness, the other says distance. Quite the opposite.
If you say “The weather is cold”, say “Cold”. If you say “The weather is hot”, say “Hot”. Two different extremes in meaning.
Same logic for “Frequent” and “Infrequent”.
In order for a word to be considered an antonym, its use in the sentence must be consistent in a literal or figurative sense.
Does Negation Suffix Create Opposite Meaning?
No.
“To go” and “Not to go” are not opposites. One is positive, the other is negative. Same situation with “Dirty” and “Undirty”. The word “undirty” is not the same as “clean”, it just indicates the absence of “dirty”.
This distinction is critical. Students hang out here. The opposite of “Clean” is “Dirty”. It’s not “dirty free”.
Difference Between Literal Meaning and Figurative Meaning
Antonyms must also be consistent across layers of meaning.
In the sentence “Ayşe came to us last night”, the verb “came” is used literally. It’s a physical move.
In the sentence “Our friendship lasts a lifetime”, the verb “goes” has a figurative meaning. They don’t really go away, continuity is expressed.
If “to come” is used literally and “to go” is used metaphorically, these two words are not considered antonyms in the context of that sentence. Because the layers of meaning do not overlap.
Practical Steps for 4th Grade Students
- Check Word Type: Adjective or adverb? If it’s a verb, pay attention.
- Isolate the Negation Suffix: The suffixes “-mez, -maz, -mı, -mi” do not create antonyms.
- Compare Layer of Meaning: Are they both real? Are they both metaphors?
