Everglades National Park is launching the Florida Python Challenge again. If you want to help wage war on an invasive species, your window is open. The announcement came early this week, partnering with local groups for this year’s run.
The Rules
Here is how it works.
July 10 to July 19. You trap and kill pythons. Humane dispatch only. Bring them to a designated check station within 24 hours. They get measured. Then added to your total. At the end of ten days, the prize goes to two people: whoever caught the most snakes, and whoever caught the longest.

Pedro Ramos, the superintendent, said that. Engaging the public raises awareness. It builds support for conservation in South Florida. Simple logic.
The Invaders
Burmese pythons belong in southeast Asia.
They came here in the 1970s. Pet trade imports. Owners got overwhelmed by snakes that hit 13 feet. They dumped them. Mistakes released into the wild. The snakes fit perfectly into Florida’s subtropics. No predators to eat them. No competition. They became kings of the food chain quickly.
Now? The population is a ghost. Nobody knows the exact count. Researchers guessed between 100,0怎样 and 300, thousand snakes slithering around. Wildlife is being decimated.
The Scores
The easiest solution remains the most direct. Go out and grab them.
The challenge started in 2013, then 2016. Annual since 2020.
Last year saw a record. 934 hunters from the US and Canada joined in. They bagged 294 snakes. That’s all gone in one trip.
A $10,00 prize went to someone who killed 60 snakes. Think about that. Sixty snakes in ten days. Another prize went for length. The record snake—15 feet 11 inches—was killed by someone in the Novice category. Does an amateur look that confident? Probably not. But the rules said Novice. So that’s that.
Safety First
You can’t just shoot them with firearms. No hunting dogs allowed.
The rules are strict. You need an online safety certification before you leave your house. Only designated hunting grounds are open. Use air guns or a pike. Pithing means stabbing the brain. Fast and effective.
